SOME DANGERS OF DRUG-TAKING

All mood-altering drugs in some way distract the user from reality. Taken excessively, as addicts use them, there are obvious dangers. When people are drunk on alcohol, stoned on cannabis or out of their mind on cocaine or heroin, they are, for instance, vulnerable to road accidents, falls and other accidental injuries. Even small amounts of drugs like tranquillisers or alcohol can affect their ability to drive or operate machinery.
All drugs become more dangerous when they are mixed. Adding one drug on top of another increases the chances of overdose. Mixed together, lower doses of either drug are more powerful and will prove fatal earlier.
Finally, all drugs bought on the street are a potential danger because they may not be what they claim to be. Many are mixed with other substances to give them more bulk. Sometimes these substances are harmful in themselves. They may be stronger than claimed, making accidental overdose a possibility
